Many (if not most) “smart home” devices only work on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.
Notable devices/systems that only like 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks include (but are not limited to):
Cameras/doorbells (such as Ring, Blink, etc.)
MyQ devices, including garage door openers
Smart thermostats (such as Nest)
Smart-lighting devices
Smart appliances (such as refrigerators, dishwashers, faucets, etc.)
Most other devices that are “Smart ________”
Older devices
If you are having issues with any of devices “not seeing”, intermittently connecting, or simply failing to connect to your network, check the device’s manufacturer’s documentation to check for any mention of 2.4GHz requirements. For example, here is Ring’s page that goes over the Wi-Fi requirements (most major manufacturers of such devices have documentation published online).
If you are using our managed Wi-Fi system, we can ensure IoT compatibility by making some modifications - please open a ticket in the client portal, reach out here on our site, or give us a call.
